What is L-theanine?
L-theanine is an amino acid found in both green and black tea as well as fungi. It has been found to promote relaxation without drowsiness (1).
How does L-theanine work?
L-theanine is believed to increase dopamine and serotonin production in the brain, it also increases relaxation by enhancing alpha wave activity in the brain (2). Our brains produce alpha waves during meditation and deep relaxation.
Why combine CBD and L-theanine?
Evidence suggests that CBD can reduce stress and anxiety. CBD dampens the sympathetic nervous system and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system stimulates our ‘fight or flight’ response. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated after a stressful situation to induce calm and bring stress levels down. CBD is thought to increase the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter which boosts the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to steer us towards calmer waters(3)(4).
L-theanine does not cause drowsiness so combining L-theanine with CBD provides a double dose of ‘calm’ without an unpleasant, groggy feeling.
